Inspired by Suzanne Collins’ most recent novel, Lionsgate is creating a new ‘Hunger Games’ film.
Collins revealed the dystopian series’ fifth novel on Thursday. The book, titled “Sunrise on the Reaping,” will be published the following year.
A few hours later, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson disclosed that the film studio will be producing the current chapter’s screen version, with a November 20, 2026, theatrical release date planned.
The new film is anticipated to be directed by Francis Lawrence, who helmed the first four in the franchise. Under the Color Force label, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson will produce the project.
Collins’ original novel “The Hunger Games” launched the “Hunger Games” trilogy, which delves into themes of survival, oppression, rebellion, and the fallout from power. The sequels “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay” followed.
The Hunger Games, starring Jennifer Lawrence, and its three sequels, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2,” were developed by Lionsgate.
The narrative takes place in the dystopian nation of Panem, which consists of 13 impoverished districts and the affluent Capitol. Children from the first 12 districts are chosen by lottery each year to take part in The Hunger Games, an obligatory televised combat royale death fight.
Collins wrote a prequel to the trilogy called “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” in 2020. Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler starred in the film adaptation, which Lionsgate released in 2023.
Timed to coincide with the 50th Hunger Games, popularly known as the Second Quarter Quell, “Sunrise on the Reaping” will return to the world of Panem 24 years before the events of “The Hunger Games”.
